About African Dawn Wines
African Dawn Wines is a wine company selling wines produced in harmony with nature. To realize this production of wine in harmony with nature, African Dawn Wines has joined the South-African Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI), a pioneering partnership between the South-African wine industry and the conversation sector. The goal of this BWI is to protect the unique biodiversity of the Western Cape in South-Africa, also called "Cape Floral Kingdom". This Cape Floral Kingdom is unique as it is the smallest yet richest plant kingdom on earth but at the same time this floral wonderland - home to 90% of South African's wine production - is under increasing pressure due to urban and agricultural expansion. Therefore African Dawn Wines and Rooiberg Winery have teamed up to launch a range of wines that would generate funds for the conservation of South Africa's natural environment through joining the BWI, the Biodiversity & Wine initiative. But wines produced in harmony with nature means more than joining the BWI according to African Dawn Wines. On African Dawn Wines' initiative cork producer Amorim has developed corks that have been harvested from organic forests licensed by Forest Steward Councilship (FSC). Besides FSC certified corks African Dawn Wines also intended to use environmentally friendly labels while developing the total concept of wines produced in harmony with nature. The result of this is a worldwide scoop of African Dawn Wines being the first wine company worldwide using FSC certified corks and FSC certified paper for their wine labels. African Dawn Wines has the ambition to be a sophisticated wine company with wines produced in harmony with nature. Besides producing this range of wines, African Dawn Wines also wants to raise awareness about the environment by informing people and businesses about the importance and indispensability of biodiversity. About biodiversity, BWI and FSC In short it can be said that biodiversity, the variety of life on Earth, is essential to sustaining the living networks and systems that provide us all with health, wealth, food, fuel and the vital services our lives depend on. Human activity is causing the diversity of life on Earth to be lost at a greatly accelerated rate. These losses are irreversible, impoverish us all and damage the life support systems we rely on every day.
The Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI), of which the producer of African Dawn Wines is a member, is a pioneering partnership between the South African wine industry and the conservation sector. The goals are to minimise the further loss of threatened natural habitat, to maintain the indigenous South-African biodiversity, and to contribute to sustainable wine production, through the adoption of biodiversity guidelines by the South African wine industry.
Besides the membership of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative, African Dawn Wines has taken other dispositions to enlarge the environmentally friendliness of the wines. African Dawn Wines is the first wine company worldwide making use of FSC certified corks and labels. FSC corks and paper have been harvested cyclically from organic forests that have been licensed by FSC, without harming or cutting down the trees. Cork oaks have a lifespan of more than 200 years and contribute to the survival of many native species of fauna, which is a part of biodiversity. Also special about FSC cork stoppers is they are 100% recyclable and can be reused in the manufacture of products other than closures (for example furniture and clothes).
